Braided Bangs: Your Bohemian Summer Look

Screen shot 2013-06-12 at 2.27.49 PM
The disheveled elegance of beatnik braids continue to suffuse fashion and beauty trends. From halo to headband, French to fishtail, all kinds of elaborate entwines are being worn on the runway and the street. But the complexity of making these looks is off-putting for some, so here’s another option: A side-swept braided fringe. One of the best –– and easiest –– ways to adopt the trend, this insouciant look captures the beachy and bohemian aesthetic, keeps hair off the face on hot days, and can be worn in a variety of ways, as seen in the collage. For our tips to adding this simple and chic style to your arsenal, click notes.
Step: Towel-dry hair to damp. Separate your bang section and mist set and style spray into bangs. Blowdry them completely. Now mist them with dry shampoo; tousle and shake with hands for a nice gritty texture, perfect for braiding.
Step: Separate bangs into two or three strands –– two strands is simpler, three strands makes more detailed patterns. Wind the strands over and under each other to create a basic but beautiful braid. Take fine sections if you want a slender twine, take thicker sections for a chunky braid. Use a clip or bobby pins to fix braid into hairstyle.
Step: The rest of your hair can be styled as you like it. Wear with waves for upmost bohemia; sweep into a sleek upstyle to add drama to your free spirit; or make hair straight to create contrasting elements.

Selena Gomez's Shoulder Mohawk

Selena Gomez’s Off the Shoulder Mohawk Braid at the VMAs

Worn at this past weekend’s VMAs, this is a clever combination of two trends by Spring Breaker, Selena Gomez. If you’re a regular trend-spotter, you’ll have noted a wave of celebrity pompadours recently –– Miley Cyrus anyone –– and Selena combines that dramatic style, which serves to lift and elongate cheekbones, with a swinging, beatnik braid, artfully placed to mimic a mohawk. The songstress says, when you want something, ‘Come and Get It’; to get this look, click style notes.

Step: Use the shine and hold of Kevin Murphy Night.Rider to create a high and handsome quiff.
Step: Gather rest of hair behind pompadour. Use a list mist of Kevin Murphy Session.Spray along the sides and into the back to keep hair sleek and flyaway free. Mist gathered hair with Kevin Murphy Fresh.Hair for texture and grip.
Step: Make a chunky, three-strand braid and, for the mohawk effect, use pins to secure to scalp. Secure the end with elastic and swing over the shoulder. Mist style with Kevin Murphy Session.Spray for flyaway and humidity defense.

Dry Shampoo the modern women's style weapon...

We’re still waiting for Prince Charming to rescue us from the tower, but at least we can count on dry shampoo. It rescues us from that most wicked of crones –– the time-consuming beauty regime. Battling the 6:00am conference call, power lunches, and late night Pilates is leaving us tired and grouchy, not pretty and witty. Further, the latest beauty buzz is that daily use of detergent shampoo strips hair of too much sebum, the natural oil that keeps hair shiny and supple. Luckily, innovators in hair care made dry shampoo a noteworthy go to –– a water-free way to freshen hair, soak up excess oils, and remove buildup. Either in aerosol, dust-on, or shake-on form, the starch or silica based formulas bequeath longer life to hairstyles and less trips to the shower. Dry shampoo is not only an oil-absorbing weapon, but an amazing styling aid, creating texture and volume –– perfect for the tousled and undone beauty looks currently trending on this blog and beyond. For the dos and don’ts of dry shampoo:
Do: Shake can vigorously –– the ingredients need to be bounced around –– and be at least 8-10 inches away from root when you spray. This technique evenly distributes product without buildup.
Don’t: Leave it in. Dry shampoo needs to be brushed out. As you brush out, the dirt and buildup will be removed, leaving you with cleanliness, texture and volume.
Do: Layer into hair creatively. Lift hair up and get into the underneath, sides and back.
Don’t: Put onto sopping wet hair. It’s called dry shampoo for a reason.

Great Hair Color: Inspiration & Formulation for Illuminated Coral

Soft, translucent hues of copper, rose and crimson add sparkling warmth to bouncy curls. This look combines a rich, warm base with ribbons of pastels to add shimmer and dimension. The combination of tones ripples and shines for a look that is distinctive and exotic, like a tropical flower. A variety of red tones creates balance and emphasizes movement while the rich background hue grounds the softer colors, for a pallet that works on both light and dark skin tones. For professional tips for a the perfect formulation to attain this hue, see the below style tips below.
Tips: Hand painted highlights is the best way to get the lighter pieces to merge seamlessly with the base shade. Apply the base color first, using an alternative virgin application. Apply formula 1 to roots, and immediately pull through formula 2 on the ends. Process, shampoo and blow dry. Then, beginning in the front hairline, take diagonal sections and paint individual tendrils of formula 3 down each section, uniting them into a point at the tip. Keep sections separated with plastic wrap. Repeat, working up and back in diagonal sections. Process to a level 8. Shampoo and towel dry. Apply formulas 4 and 5 to alternating sections. Process until desired tone is achieved. Rinse and style as desired.
Formulas: (For a starting level 6)
1) Goldwell Topchic 6K with 20 Volume
2) Goldwell Topchic 6K with 30 Volume
3) Goldwell Silk Lift Lightener with 30 Volume
4)Goldwell Colorance 1 part 8RP + 1 part 7RR with Colorance Acid Lotion
5)Goldwell Colorance 1 part 9KG + 1part 7OO with Colorance Acid Lotion

Celebrity HairStyle Inspiration: Golden Highlights & Long Waves for Halston Sage

Celebrity HairStyle Inspiration: Golden Highlights & Long Waves for Halston Sage

Nickelodeon starlet Halston Sage knows How to Rock this mid-to-long length heavily layered cut. The color is a great fit for her California-girl complexion. Using different tones of blonde – from dark and dirty to bright and golden – the subtle combination highlighting adds depth, dimension, and looks sensational. The shape and movement of strands flowing around her face-frame accentuate her strong cheekbones and pretty eyes for a youthful, beautifying style. It’s a straightforward long layer cut, made special with great color, and artful, feature-enhancing styling. For tips to attaining a similar look see below.

Step: So as long as your natural base color is no darker than a mid-brown, these flaxen highlights are well within your reach. Talk to your colourist about all-over multi-dimensional highlights ranging from fashionable dirty blonde to classic golden.

The cut is a classic long layer shape with center-part. Layers should fall around cheekbones and chin, to spotlight femininity.

Step: For styling, blowdry hair full yet smooth by cocktailing KEVIN.MURPHY FULL AGAIN and BODY.BUILDER applying body builder to the roots and FULL.AGAIN to the mid lenghts and ends; working through damp hair, and blowdrying with boar bristle round brush.
Step: After blowdry apply 1-2 pumps of KEVIN.MURPHY YOUNG.AGAIN and create tousled, ‘S’ and ‘C’ shaped waves that dance around the face frame. Mist a layer of KEVIN.MURPHY SESSION.SPRAY to add texture, hold, and humidity defense.

Sending Shockwaves To Chanel, Kiera Knightley’s Tousled Bob

Xno8o-tATwDl
Concerned by the “overtly sexual” nature of Chanel’s new fragrance ad, prim parents in the UK got the Advertising Standards Authority to ban the commercial from running during children’s programming. Such a shame because they are missing Kiera’s gorgeous, vintage bob. With a whimsical, lightweight, flouncy feel it’s been cut to the nape to build structure and elevation, which heightens the impression of volume. We love how the softly tousled side-sweep drifts elegantly across her eye line, while the length, draped off her sculpted cheekbones, is perfectly placed to frame her pretty face. For tips to creating your own version of the Kiera’s look:
Step: Ask your stylist for a modern interpretation of a vintage bob. Go for a side-swept fringe to draw attention to eyes; get layers to keep it soft and bouncy; and have it hang off the cheekbones for the perfect face frame. If you don’t think your cheekbones can handle the attention, wear it longer. Chin length also works well.
Step: For styling, apply KEVIN MURPHY BODY BUILDER at roots and KEVIN MURPHY FULL AGAIN to the mid-lengths and ends of damp hair and blowdry with LATTOUF ROUND BRISTLE BRUSH for root lift, shape and movement.
Step: Apply mid-lengths and ends with YOUNG AGAIN  Now use a curling iron or wand to softly curl random pieces for a romantic, whimsical finish.
Step: Mist finished style with SESSION SPRAY SPRAY for hold and texture. Using hands, tousle into perfectly imperfect shape.

Peeking Pastels

In this image, pastel and jewel tones come together in elegantly smudged layers of cool hues. Like the blended finish of a watercolor painting, this vibrant look is bright and clear –– with dazzling shades of violet and blue offsetting sparks of silver and beige. The sophisticated cut has shorter, tapered lengths underneath, which allows the longer strands of the fringe and crown to move with liquid fluidity.
An eye-skimming front lends a playful sexiness to the shape. To get this artful look in a few simple steps,
Step: Shape and color work together to create this look. Start with an undercut area from temples to nape. This will collapse the hair underneath and provide a backdrop for the surface texture.
Step: Color the shorter undercut in a dark tone and lift the strand on top to a bright cool blonde. Tone the blonde with a platinum shade, then add bright pieces with hair chalk or semi-permanent color.
Step: Use color save shampoo and conditioner to keep vibrancy and prevent color bleeding between the intermingled shades.

Love it or loathe it pastel hair colour is making its way for a big Christmas 2012 trend.
The most popular question of this trend would be how do I wear it and what would suit my style?
The great thing about pastels is you can choose and work it into your own style whether is be the softer look of pastel pinks, lilac or mint or if your not so into the “sweet”looking pastels the “grunge” look of the greys, deeper blue and green tones may be more for you.

Kate Middleton Get Banged Up

Princess of hearts, Kate Middleton, was spotted wearing a new hairdo at yesterday’s opening of the Treasures Gallery at the Natural History Museum, London. We think her new bangs help her look more modern, less matronly. Her tresses are almost always voluminous and tousled, but now she’s got more attention on eyes, and a better frame for her pretty features. For tips on getting your own great bangs, click style notes.
Step: Bangs can be side-swept or straight, blunt or soft, narrow or wide. Talk to your stylist about the perfect match for your style. Go in for a trim every two weeks to keep them looking good.
Step: A good tip for blow drying bangs: Mist with KEVIN.MURPHY SESSION.SPRAY, then blow dry side to side with comb, and then straight down. This will give you a smooth, bubble free bang with lots of shine.
Step: Like Kate, add tousle and flow to your style by finishing with a few twists of a curling iron on the ends.
We recommend KEVIN.MURPHY LOVES CORTEX CURLING IRONS.

Selena Gomez's Classy Updo

Selena Gomez’s Classy Low Updo

Selena Gomez’s styling goes from strength to strength. She played the fun and flirty child star so well, and now that she is evolving into a young women, her look is going the same way. Here she shows off an elegant low updo, which is a great way to combine the casual and the chic. The opposite –– a high updo –– can appear too forced and too dramatic, especially on such a pretty and radiant young belle. This way, Selena is able to keep hair off the face –– helping to elevate cheekbones and chin in a polished and sophisticated way, while living that magical moment between woman and girl.

Step: Towel-dry hair to damp. Apply 1 pump of KEVIN.MURPHY YOUNG.AGAIN along mid-lengths and ends and blowdry with paddle brush for smoothness and shine.

Step: Lightly mist hair with KEVIN.MURPHY FRESH.HAIR to add body, texture and grip. Make a side part and separate bangs. Gather rest of hair low in the back and use hair ties and / or bobby pins to fix it as you like it.

Step: Push bangs across the eye line for an elegant side-sweep. Pull out a few pieces of hair close to each ear for a slightly undone, face-framing effect. Finish with a light glaze of KEVIN.MURPHY SESSION.SPRAY all over for night time sparkle.

Seeing Red...

Red is defiantly the new season color in Hollywood with many of the stars turning to warmer rich shades of red.

Lindsay Lohan stepped out in her new red hair in early October claiming that it's actually the wrong color than it's supposed to be, although see has obviously decided to keep the color stepping out again at the premiere of her new film "Liz & Dick" with soft red curls and an ivory slip dress that left little to the imagination.

Snooki from Jersey Shore is also seeing red...She has just dyed her usually dark hair a bright shade of red.

And Snooki ensured she showed off her distinctive locks to full effect, by teaming sporting a matching pair of leather trousers.
The Jersey Shore star teamed her tight trousers with a black jacket and floppy felt hat as she promoted her new perfume Snooki Couture.

Always red our own Sarah De Bono is still sporting her infamous red locks with her recent social media uproar.

Want to warm up your hair step into Lattouf Hair and Day Spa for a complimentary color consultation with our award winning stylists.

Forever Changing

Varying their choices from month to month; meet some of fashions hair yoyo's

Switching from glam to grunge on a weekly basis.
Rihanna has a catalogue of stylistic tricks up her sleeve.
A cropped Riri scrubbed up nicely in a demure white gown for this year's Met Ball; and then ruptured this sleek image with a catalogue of almost entirely male shirts and low slung shorts for her recent 777 tour.

While Kelly Osbourne 's shift away from her lengthy teenage grunge phase deserves an essay in itself, the reality TV starlet still seems to be finding her fashion feet. August 2012 saw a scruffy-haired Kelly while September shifted to a no-nonsense, top-knotted attempt at high fashion, with Tim Burton's Willy Wonka shades on for good measure.

The lyrics of Nicki Minaj' s 2012 single 'Va Va Voom' have certainly got under the singer's skin; or in the mind of her stylist, at least. From just September to October this year, the singer embraced a whole colour palette of neon and bubblegum hues in her hair. Long may she never find muted shades.
