Highlight From the VMAs: Taylor Swift’s Flapper Fantastic Ringlets

Highlight From the VMAs: Taylor Swift’s Flapper Fantastic Ringlets

In the 1920s, Flappers were a new breed of women intent on flouting the rules of acceptable society. Known for being brash, treating sex casually, and dressing provocatively –– they had the temerity to bob their hair –– these fashionable young women set the scene for women’s liberation. Now, with The Great Gatsby remake bringing the Jazz Age back into style, many of springs trends are modern interpretations of the fashions of that time. Always on the pulse, Taylor Swift cut right to it at the VMAs. Her romantic pin-curls give her a faux-bob shape, creating a vintage, retro vibe that swings like a Charleston. With modern hot-tools, anyone with mid-length locks can recreate pin-curls in a few minutes, giving you a memorable style that will be the envy of your friends. Learn how in the style notes below.

Step: Prep hair with KEVIN.MURPHY FULL AGAIN Make a deep side-part. Section hair from the crown to the ears.
Step: Starting from the crown, make half-inch horizontal sections, and sub-divide into three or four vertical sections. If it helps, use pins or clips to clip sections (that you are not working on) out of the way.
Step: Now use a curing iron to create curl in these vertical sections, working inward towards the face. The barrel size of the iron determines the kinds of curls you make. For tight, flapper curls, use a 3/4 inch or one inch curling iron. (Use a bigger iron for softer, less curly, more wavy looks.)
Step: Once a curl is made, use pin-curl clips to pin to head. repeat all around. Once all curls are clipped, mist with KEVIN.MURPHY SESSION.SPRAY and allow to cool (to speed this up, use the cool air button on your blow-dryer).
Step: Once cool, brush out gently with a flat-brush until the curly shape is as you like it (use Taylor’s image as inspiration). Now use pins all around to secure in place. Mist again with SESSION.SPRAY to add extra hold to the finish.

Or if your not talented with a curling wand then book into a your closest Lattouf Hair & Day Spa location for a set and style this will give you the same look but with a longer lasting hold.

Gatsby Hair Inspiration

With The Great Gatsby lighting up the sliver screen, many of this year’s hair, fashion, and beauty trends relate to the Roaring Twenties, which means it is a great time to try romantic pin curls, especially for special summer occasions. To use this piece of 1920s inspiration, mid-length locks work best. If that’s your style, artfully constructed pin-curls and finger-waves can give you a contemporary version of this classic retro vibe. For our styling tips, click the notes.
Step: Prep hair with protective thickening lotion. Take a deep side parting. Section hair from the top of the crown to the ear.
Step: Now take half-inch horizontal sections starting from the top. Subdivide those horizontal sections into three or four vertical sections. Now use an iron to create curl in these sections.
Step: The iron size will determine the tightness of the wave. Use a 3/4-inch iron for a definitive, flapper-inspired 1920s look. Or, for something softer and less curly, a bigger barreled iron is better. Either way, wrap hair on the iron going towards the face. Do this throughout the side, creating rows until you run out of hair.
Step: Pin curl clip these curls to head; spray with primp working spray; allow to cool; release clips.
Step: Brush out with a flat brush and form the wave with hands.
Step: To create an updo out of this texture, simply pin up the back with bobby pins.

Best Vamp @ Oscars 2013

Best Vamp: Kim Kardashian

Yummy mummy-to-be Kim K gave oodles of va-va voom with her vampish look; namely a sleek, glossy mane, lashings of lashes and a berry-stained pout.

Keep reading for our step by step on how to get kim's look...

Step 1: Rub a few drops of KEVIN MURPHY YOUNG.AGAIN between your palms, then run your hands down damp hair, from mid-shaft to ends, and comb through.

Step 2: Rough-dry your hair by tousling it with your fingers until it's 80 percent dry.

Step 3: Apply KEVNIN MURPHY GRITTY BUSINESS and part your hair and secure the top layers with clips on both sides. Starting with the loose hair in the back, pull one-inch sections forward with a large, round, mixed-bristle brush as you dry from roots to ends. Unclip the top layers and continue drying this way. (We recommend LATTOUF ROUND BRUSH #3)

Step 4: Once your hair is completely dry, rub a pea-size amount of KEVIN MURPHY EASY RIDER between your fingers, then apply onto ends and over any short, broken hairs around the crown.

Step 5: To finish and lock in place mist with KEVIN MURPHY SESSION SPRAY.
