Highlight from the VMAs: Jared Leto’s Macho Ombre

Highlight from the VMAs: Jared Leto’s Macho Ombre

Three things needed to be a bad boy rock star: Leather jacket, white T-shirt, highlights. One may mock, but it was the Punks that started the trend, and nobody messes with them. At the VMAs, Jared Leto agreed. The style is a men’s long layer shape, with a masculine short to long feel. By eliminating bulk and creating a strong perimeter, it feels both soft and textured. But it’s the macho ombre that will be remembered. Jared’s dark brown roots blend to dirty blonde ends, lightening the face for a tough macho take on modern beauty trends. To learn how to get this I-just-trashed-the-hotel-room look, click style notes.

Step: After growing hair out, ask your stylist for a masculine long layer razor-cut with center-part. Make sure of weight removal as this makes the space to create soft texture without the bulk. For the color, ask for hand-painted dark blonde ombre on the ends. By hand-painting on the color, it will look more natural.
Step: Towel-dry hair and make a center-part. Cocktail KEVIN MURPHY UNDRESSED and NIGHT RIDER in palms and work through hair. Scrunch, ruffle, shake and twist to create natural texture and movement.
Step: For the gritty lived-in finish, pulse layers of KERASTASE POWDER PUFF into roots and shake out.

Selena Gomez's Shoulder Mohawk

Selena Gomez’s Off the Shoulder Mohawk Braid at the VMAs

Worn at this past weekend’s VMAs, this is a clever combination of two trends by Spring Breaker, Selena Gomez. If you’re a regular trend-spotter, you’ll have noted a wave of celebrity pompadours recently –– Miley Cyrus anyone –– and Selena combines that dramatic style, which serves to lift and elongate cheekbones, with a swinging, beatnik braid, artfully placed to mimic a mohawk. The songstress says, when you want something, ‘Come and Get It’; to get this look, click style notes.

Step: Use the shine and hold of Kevin Murphy Night.Rider to create a high and handsome quiff.
Step: Gather rest of hair behind pompadour. Use a list mist of Kevin Murphy Session.Spray along the sides and into the back to keep hair sleek and flyaway free. Mist gathered hair with Kevin Murphy Fresh.Hair for texture and grip.
Step: Make a chunky, three-strand braid and, for the mohawk effect, use pins to secure to scalp. Secure the end with elastic and swing over the shoulder. Mist style with Kevin Murphy Session.Spray for flyaway and humidity defense.

Katy Perry Does Black

Katy Perry Does Black

“The Queen of Color” as we’ve dubbed her before stepped out to the VMA Awards with black hair. Though quite familiar for most women, we would imagine Katy wearing anything but. We are loving the simple elegance this dark hue brings to her fair skin and features. The cascading waves work in perfect harmony with the deep and rich color for a look that is absolutely stunning.
